Product Highlight: BumDuo by MommySwami

When I attended the Houston BIRTH fair last month, I was privileged to meet Bonnie and Juliet, creators of a new, all natural diaper rash preventative and healing solution.  They are based here in Houston and call their family run company MommySwami.  A little about their products:

The Bum Keeper:  preventative care--keeps baby's bum healthy by creating a protective barrier of  organic, nourishing essential oils.  Gentle enough for use at every diaper change, sweet almond oil and olive oil combine with a blend of antibacterial and calming essential oils to keep those cheeks sweet.  Doubles as a soothing massage oil for baby and/or mommy.

Don't Worry-Bum Happy:  a unique and effective blend of organic essential oils designed to heal and soothe diaper rash (including angry pustules and beastly yeast).  Contains no petro-chemicals or fish oils that could be harmful to baby (or cloth diapers).  Naturally antibacterial, anti-fungal,  anti-infectious, anti-microbial, and anti-inflammatory.  (note:  not intended for preventative care...for maintenance, choose Bum Keeper.

The Bum Keep and Don't Worry-Bum Happy are available in a Duo pack in the baby, naturally store.  Discounted for a limited time!  More info here!

Gro Baby Prints! Preorder Yours Today!

The Gro Baby One Size Shell diaper system is coming out with new PRINTS! They are adorable, and now available for PREORDER in our store. Reserve your favorite (or favorites!) today! (*no payment due until product ships...)

If you aren't familiar with the Gro Baby system, here is a bit of info for you:

  • Gro Baby is a shell diaper system--meaning it is designed so that the outer shell is reused for multiple diaper changes.  It features a snap-in soaker pad that you swap out at each change, only changing shells if it gets excessively wet or soiled.
  • Since you are able to reuse the shells multiple times, Gro Baby can be a very economical diaper system.  You can buy extra soaker pads separately, in addition to the soaker and booster that come with the shells!
  • According to Gro Baby's creators, most users find 2-4 shells per day is plenty.  Newborns may need more, however....
  • New!  Gro Baby users now have the option to choose either the 100% organic cotton soaker pad, or the new biodegradable and compostable Biosoaker Pads* in their Gro Baby shells.  Biosoaker pads are designed to fit perfectly in the Gro Baby shells and are prefect for travel, trips away from home, and those times when the laundry just hasn't dried yet...
*baby, naturally LLC hopes to add Biosoaker Pads to our inventory in the near future....

I suppose this is a bit unusual...but I am at a loss on how else to do this, so here goes:

I am looking for a way to get a hold of Kate (met at the BIRTH fair).  Kate, if you are reading this, I have tried e-mailing you back several times about the trunk show, both from the business and my personal account and they keep getting rejected...so, if you see this can you e-mail me from a different e-mail account??

I hope you see this :)

THANKS!

Houston BIRTH Fair 2009

We had a great time this past Saturday at the Houston BIRTH Fair!  It was great to see so many moms, dads, moms & dads to be, and kids checking out all the great birth and beyond resources Houston has to offer.  I met lots of wonderful vendors and professionals as well!  It was a lot of fun and I am looking forward to next year already!

I was privileged to share a booth with Jamie from Hypnobirthing Experiences.  If you are in the Houston metro and looking into Hypnobirthing, please check out Jamie's website.  We had a great table location, right across from the main entrance.  My wonderful husband stayed up late with me the night before working out our booth set up and packing up all the diapers, slings, and accessories.  For my first time as a vendor, I think it came together pretty well.  I learned a lot, though, and now know what to expect for next time.

My son, leading the ladies down the hall.
Our booth.
This was at the end of the day...Lincoln was a less than willing model at this point : )

Thanks to everyone who came by our booth!  It was great to meet you!

Under the Nile Organic Toys

Under the Nile manufactures more than 200 products ranging from bibs to toys, all using 100% organic Egyptian cotton carrying the USDA organic seal.  No pesticides or chemicals are used during the entire process, from growing the cotton to manufacturing the items.  Under the Nile is also proud to use only metal-free or vegetable dyes.  All toys manufactured by Under the Nile are stuffed with 100% organic cotton--not synthetic fluff.

One of the most exciting aspects of working with Under the Nile is knowing that the sale of their products helps to support the 13 Villages Project.  Taking place in 13 rural villages in Egypt, the 13 Villages Projects educates villagers on how to manufacture the fruit and vegetable line of toys by Under the Nile.  Villagers are able to remain in their villages to work and are given an advance for their work and to purchase materials needed to make the toys.  Under the Nile also provides health care and education and dental and overall health to the villagers.

Recently, Under the Nile's fruit basket toy was featured in Baby Maternity Retailer magazine.

We are pleased to carry the fruit basket at baby, naturally LLC, and let me tell you, it is ADORABLE.  We also carry the fantastically cute veggie crate.  What a fun way for your children to learn about fruit and vegetables.  And, knowing that they are made from 100% organic cotton inside and out, you can be at ease when they promptly stuff each one in their mouths (just as my son would do...pardon me while I remove that magazine cover from his chompers...).

Choosing a Baby Carrier

Now that you know about the mei tai carrier, I wanted to share a bit about other carriers that are out there.  I haven't put together videos yet, but they are forthcoming!

Wrap Carriers
A wrap baby carrier is a long, continuous strip of fabric that can be tied on in a variety of different ways to carry baby.  They are one of the most versatile carriers, in that you have many options for different carrying positions.  Wraps are best suited for front and hip carries.  If you are mostly interested in using your wrap for a hip carry, there are shorter wraps available that are perfect for that purpose (called Rebozo length).  Back carries are possible with a wrap, but be warned that it is best to use a non-stretchy material (such as a woven cotton wrap) and you will want to have a spotter unless you are an old pro at it!
Above:  The Moby Wrap is an example of a stretchy wrap.

Above:  The Ellaroo Wrap is an example of a woven wrap.

Pouch Carriers
The Pouch Carriers are especially beginner friendly.  They are worn across the body (as you would wear a sash...because, you know, we all wear sashes on a regular basis...).  The fabric of the pouch forms a pocket in which you can carry your baby.  For infants, they work great for cradle carries.  As baby gets a bit older, they may enjoy facing forward in the pouch in a kangaroo carry.  Pouches can even be used with older babies for a hip carry.  I always keep a pouch in my car for running into the store quickly with the baby.  With pouch carriers, sizing can be important, unless you are looking at an adjustable pouch.  If you are looking at a sized pouch, be sure to measure accurately to ensure it will fit you properly.  If you are shopping while you are pregnant, be sure to allow for your changing size post-pregnancy.

Above:  The Slingling Pouch Carrier

Ringsling Carriers
Ringslings are similar to the pouch carriers in that that baby is seated into a pouch in the fabric.  The difference comes in that with a ringsling, you are able to adjust the fit by sliding the fabric tail through 2 rings (usually aluminum or plastic).  This allows the carrier to adjust to a growing baby, or be used by 2 different sized adults.  The tail on the carrier comes in handy as a nursing cover, wind block, shade, or even a shield if you are trying to keep curious hands away from a sleepy baby.  Ringslings can be used for front carries, hip carries, and even back carries!  My husband and I loved our ringsling when Lincoln was newborn.  I never did master a back carry, but I do still like it for the hip carry.

My husband carrying our then 2-month old son in the ringsling.

Mei Tai Carrier
(I know I already covered these...but I wanted to include it for anyone who is just jumping in on this post later on...) : )
Mei tais are inspired by traditional Chinese baby carriers.  They are made up of a rectangular piece of fabric with 4 straps (one attached to each corner).  Mei tais can be used for infants through toddlers and are adaptable for front, back, and hip carries.  The weight of the baby is distributed over both shoulders evenly.  Mei tais may have lightly padded straps, or may not have padding at all.  Whether you go with padding or not is just personal preference.  Mei tais are my personal carrier of choice.

Above:  The BabyHawk mei tai carrier

Soft Structured Carriers
Soft structured carriers are similar in function to a mei tai carrier, but with the addition of buckle closures instead of ties.  The material is generally a bit firmer as well.  Soft structured carriers vary in the type of carries they offer, the material used to make them, the way the weight is distributed, the padding used on the shoulder straps, the type of buckle closures used, and more.  There are many types out there, so more than likely there is one to fit your needs!  We use and like the Beco Soft Structured Carrier.  At this time, we do not carry a soft structured carrier in our store, but we are on the lookout for one to add soon!

Above:  My son in the Beco, helping me in the garden (well, what we hope will someday be the garden, anyway...)

I hope this information was helpful as you start/add to/continue your search for a baby carrier!  Enjoy babywearing your child!

Mei Tai Baby Carriers (International Babywearing Week)

Today I wanted to talk a bit about mei tais (pronounced may-tie).  A mei tai baby carrier is inspired by traditional Chinese baby carriers.  They are made up of a rectangular piece of fabric with 4 straps (one attached at each corner).  Mei tais can be used for infants through toddlers and are adaptable for front, back, and hip carries.  The weight of the baby is distributed over both shoulders evenly.

I put together a video today demonstrating how to do a forward carry in a mei tai carrier.  The mei tai I am using is a Maya Tie by Maya Wrap.  We do carry these in the baby, naturally LLC store!  Please let me know if you have any questions about this carry.  I will also link to some videos of other mei tai carries for you.

I hope you enjoyed the video! Please stop by tomorrow....for our FIRST giveaway!!!!
AND, don't forget....10% off all orders with the purchase of any instock baby carriers with the cody IBW2009 (order must include a baby carrier for discount to be valid).

International Babywearing Week 2009 is Here!

(Maya Tie)
Welcome to the kickoff of International Babywearing Week!  Here at baby, naturally LLC we are kicking off the celebration with a brief introduction to the benefits of babywearing. Throughout the week, we'll be sharing a bit about the various types of carriers out there, so if you have questions, let me know and I will try and answer them in an upcoming post!  We also have two (TWO!) exciting giveaways planned, so be sure to follow along on our blog, Twitter, and Facebook for more information!

So..... why babywear?  Isn't it hard on your back/shoulders?  Won't the baby resist?

The reality is that yes, if you have a poorly designed carrier, your shoulders and back WILL get sore.  If you have a carrier that is uncomfortable for the child, they WILL resist.  But, the reality is also that it doesn't have to be that way.  There are fantastic carriers available that are designed to evenly distribute weight, meaning you can wear your child for hours or while doing doing activities such as hiking, housework, shopping with no pain.  Many carriers are so comfortable that your child may even be lulled to sleep.

(Moby Wrap)

Ok... but what are the benefits?  Why not just use a playpen?

Many parents, desperate to get something done around the house or even get a shower, rely on the playpen to keep baby safe while starting the laundry, etc.  The beauty of babywearing is that you can still do all those things, but your baby will be with you.  You don't have to worry that they are getting into something they shouldn't, or that they are bored or lonely, because they are along for the ride!  When I wear my son, I always notice how intently he watches what I am doing.  He is up at my level, so he is able to see more of what goes on.  He is able to tune into my speech because he is near my voice.  If you have to run to the grocery store, you can wear baby in a sling and avoid hauling in the car-seat or messing with a germy cart.  Bring your baby along on a hike--a wonderful way for them to enjoy nature and places a stroller can't go!

Which type of carrier should I use?
The type of carrier you decide on can vary from person to person.  Important questions to consider:  when will I be wearing the baby?  Only around the house?  Out and about?  How old is my child?  Do I want a carrier that will grow with baby, or several different carriers?  Many families choose to buy a few different carriers for different situations.  For example, I like to keep a pouch carrier in my car for quick trips into the post office or store.  When I am doing work around the house, I like a soft structured carrier or mei tai.  When my son was a newborn, I relied on a ring sling.

(BabyHawk)

During the week, I will go into more details on what the different types of carriers are.  For now, though, let's get on to the good stuff!

baby, naturally LLC is pleased to announce that we are FULLY STOCKED with a wide variety of baby carriers, just in time for International Babywearing Week 2009!  Brands you will find:

International Babywearing Week 2009

(My husband and son making quick work of the dinner clean-up)

We are gearing up to celebrate International Babywearing Week 2009 next week (September 21-28)!  Babywearing allows you to keep your baby close.  It allows you to move around the house and get things (like the mountain of laundry....) done, all without taking your eyes of your little one.  It works like magic (at least for us...usually...) to wind down a fussy baby or help them to fall asleep.  Wearing your baby means you don't have to haul the carseat into the grocery store.  You can breeze through the airport without worrying about your stroller.  You tune into your baby's needs because your baby is right there.

Next week, I will be focusing on the variety of carriers available, and hopefully answer questions you might have about babywearing.  If you don't follow the blog, you'll want to be sure to do so because there may or may not be a babywearing giveaway planned!  Stay tuned!

This video was created for Babywearing International as a PSA for babywearing. You can visit Babywearing International to learn more about babywearing and International Babywearing Week 2009 here!

FuzziBunz Perfect Size Packages

Just added to the store!

Fuzzi Bunz

You can now purchase FuzziBunz Perfect Size diapers in packages of 3, 4, 5, or 6 and receive a volume discount! This is great if you are just starting your stash or are needing to move up to the next size! Don't forget, we also offer volume discount on the FuzziBunz One-Size diapers!

Trying to decide between Perfect Size and One-Size? Here are some things to consider:

FuzziBunz Perfect Size diapers:
  • Available in sizes small, medium, and large (XS, XL, and Petite are available by special order...).  Most kiddos get by with only 2 sizes: small (7-18 lbs.) & medium (15-30 lbs.). Should you need them, XS, XL, and Petite are available by special order.
  • Wide range of color selection
  • Trim fit
  • Easy to adjust snap closures at the waist
FuzziBunz One-Size diapers:
  • Adjustable to fit babies from 7-35 lbs.
  • Uses button hole elastic (like the type in children's pants) to adjust the size of the waist and leg holes.
  • Fit is a bit bulkier than that of the Perfect Size diaper
  • Easy to adjust snap closures at the waist
  • Wide range of color selection
If you are looking for a trim fitting diaper, than the Perfect Size may be your best bet.  The One-Size tend to be a bit bulkier because they are made to fit such a wide range of sizes.  However, the One-Size will last from birth to potty training, so that's something to consider as well.  Personally, we have some of each.  The Perfect Size diapers are great for certain onesies or pants that are snug fitting and won't quite go on over a One-Size diaper.  We use both on a regular basis.

If you have any questions about which diaper to go with, or how they work, etc., please let me know!  I was thinking today of making a video series showing the different diapers.  Sometimes it helps me to see someone actually use/demonstrate the item rather than a picture.  Would you be interested in me putting together something like that?  Let me know if you think it would be helpful in the comments and I'll try to get it together!  I'm open to suggestions on what you'd like to see, too!

Shine A Light: Support My Small Business!

I am so excited to announce that I have been nominated by my awesome husband for the Shine A Light award recognizing small businesses, sponsored by American Express and NBC Universal!  This award would be an amazing opportunity for me to help grow baby, naturally LLC and better serve the community.  How it works:  my husband submitted the nomination this evening.  It is now posted on the site and eligible for registered persons to "endorse" (basically, endorsing is the same as voting for...).  If I can reach 50 endorsements by September 13th, I am eligible to move onto the judging round!  From there, the top 3 businesses will be up for voting by the public, with the top business chosen in October.  Wow!  What a wonderful opportunity!  I am beyond excited about this, and am hoping you will be willing to help me reach the 50 endorsements by the 13th.  If you are, here is what to do:

Visit my nomination story HERE. (or click on the widget above...)
In order to endorse a story, you will have to register for an account (top right of the page, or click the blue "support this story, endorse now!" button on the left and you'll see links to either login or register...).  I realize that it is asking a lot to ask you to register for an account for the sole purpose of endorsing my story, so if you are uncomfortable with that, I understand!  But, if you can get past the whole having to register thing, here is what happens next--
1.  You'll log in.
2.  If you need to, you can navigate back to my page.  You can also search for baby, naturally LLC in the nominee search box.
3.  On my story page, you will see a box near the top left that says "Support This Story, Endorse Now!".  Just click that, and you're done!  Please note that you are only allowed to endorse one business--once you've clicked the business you've chosen, you are blocked from endorsing any others.

If baby, naturally LLC does in fact reach 50 endorsements by the 13th, I will be completely humbled.  I am so excited to even be nominated!  Feel free to spread the word, too : )

Thank you thank you for your support!

Houston BIRTH Fair

Mark your calendars!  The Houston BIRTH Fair is just around the corner!  This is a free, day long event sponsored by B.I.R.T.H. (bringing information and resources to Houston) dedicated to educating families to everything related to pregnancy, birth, and beyond!  I participated last year in the fashion show as a pregnant model.  It was a last minute decision based on the fact that they were desperate from a lack of volunteers (because honestly, who wants to parade themselves around in front of crowds of people when you are twice your normal size, your feet are swollen, and the clothes you are being asked to wear may or may not fit?).  So, below is one of the few pics I am willing to share from my modeling debut.  My friend Tasha was also roped into participating as a pregnant model (actually, that's how we met...), but lucky for her, I don't have any pictures of her from the show : )

This year, I will not be revisiting my modeling days (whew!), but I will be there as a vendor!  If you are in the local Houston area, I hope you'll come by the fair and visit the baby, naturally LLC booth!  Here are the details:

Houston BIRTH Fair 2009

this week's adventure

I have been missing from the blog/twitter/facebook updates this week, and in case you don't read my family blog as well, I thought I'd share why.  After an eventful trip to the ER on Monday for severe vertigo, followed by a trip to the ENT yesterday, it was determined I have a case of vestibular neuritis (basically, an infection of the inner ear affecting the 8th cranial nerve...it prevents the brain and inner ear from sharing balance information, so I am spinning spinning all the time...).  I'm going to link to my family blog if you are interested in reading the whole saga.  I do promise to return with store updates and product highlights next week!  Thanks for bearing with me!

New Product Added: Moby Wrap UV

Did you know Moby Wraps were now available with UV protection? Using the patented Rayosan™ technology by Clarient, the fabric offers an added layer of protection from the sun while maintaining the same appearance, handle, and breathability of the original Moby Wrap.

From the Moby Wrap website:

Think of the Rayosan process as an invisible dye. It acts like a mirror and will deflect the harmful UVA and UVB rays off the fabric. These rays are bounced back and prevented from going through the fabric and harming baby’s delicate skin. Although it is a chemical process, it was tested and passed the Oeko-Tex 100 certification process, which ensures us that it was tested for harmful substances - and passed. We share Oeko-Tex commitment to your personal safety and the support of environmentally sound processes and you can rest assured that the product you have will not harm you or your child. The dye is considered to be durable for the life or the garment. It is long lasting, but will start to gradually wash out after 30 washes or so. The Rayosan coated fabric’s UPF value ranges from 44-48.

I am pleased to offer the new Moby Wrap UV to you.  My mother has a history of skin cancer, so products offering protection from the sun are important to me.  I hope they are to you, too. To Purchase, go here.

Almost the weekend...

It is 2 minutes to 9:00 am on Friday.  Lincoln has been down for his morning nap since 7:45 (it was an earlier morning than usual, so he crashed quickly!).  It is overcast and cloudy outside, meaning it is the perfect morning to be napping WITH the baby.  Sigh.  If I don't use his naps to get some work done, though, the days tend to get away from without even starting a project until after dinner.  So, work it is.

Fuzzi Bunz
Last night I added some new package deals on the Fuzzi Bunz One Size Pocket Diapers.  You can now purchase quantities of 4, 6, 9, and 12 diapers at a volume discount.  This is great if you are just starting your diaper stash, need to upgrade to a bigger size, or are looking to switch to a new diaper system all at once!  You can find these deals on our store page here.

You can become a fan of Fuzzi Bunz™ on Facebook, too!  They are doing giveaways and more on their fan page.  And, while you're at it, why not become a fan of baby, naturally LLC as well!

Now, off to pack up a diaper bag for a certain sleeping someone.  We are heading to our cloth diaper support group this morning and for once, I am determined to be on time!

Trunk Shows!

I have been working hard this week trying to get the store name out locally--taken business cards to several local businesses, posted on our mom's group message board, dropped samples off with my midwife, researched booths at 2 local fairs...and in addition, finally got my trunk show information posted!

What is a trunk show, you ask?  Well, if you are local to the Houston area and would like to see and try out any of the products first hand, then a trunk show is for you!  All you need to do is pick a date and gather some of your friends and I will bring baby, naturally LLC to you.  Trunk shows are perfect for mom's groups, baby showers, Mother's Nights Out, Saturday tea, and more.  There is even a discount available for hosting if your guests reach a certain dollar limit in orders!

Grand Opening!

Well, the day is here! I stayed up all night on Monday (rough, let me tell you...even in college, I never went more than 23 hours. This time I lasted 28, then crashed with Lincoln for his WAAAY too short nap!) getting things ready, struggling with one single, little "continue shopping" button for almost 6 hours. Luckily, the web host owner was able to help me out and all is up and running! I am so excited!

So, I wanted to share the fabulous brands you can currently find at baby, naturally LLC. I did countless hours of research, plus have personal experience with almost all of these brands, and am proud to carry each and every one of them!

  • Cloth Diapers:  FuzziBunz Perfect Size & One Size, Unbleached Indian Cotton Prefolds, Thirsties Fab Fitteds, Thirsties Duo Wraps, Thirsties Covers, Gro Baby One Size, Wonderwraps covers, Dream-Eze All-in-Ones, AppleCheeks
  • Baby Wearing:  Moby Wraps, BabyHawk mei tai carriers, Mini Moby Wraps (for kids!)
  • Laundry:  Jenny's Simply Clean detergent, clothespins bags (handmade!)
  • Toys:  coming soon!
  • Apparel:  coming soon!
  • Gifts:  Moby Swaddle Blanket
More wonderful brands will be coming soon!  Several of my shipments did not make it in time for opening day, but look for them to be posted soon.  I will be placing updates on new shipments here on the blog, as well as on the new baby, naturally e-mail newsletter (sign up below!).

As we grow, I will be looking to add more handmade items and expand the inventory for diapers, baby wearing, and toys.  I welcome your thoughts, ideas, suggestions for what you'd like to see at baby, naturally!

Back in town

We got back to Houston yesterday after 2.5 weeks visiting my parents up in Omaha.  I had 3 big boxes of inventory waiting for me when I got here, so tomorrow will be spent getting those items logged into the computer.  I am really hoping everything gets here in time for opening day!  Speaking of opening day, I have been saying August 2009, but haven't actually said an exact date yet.  So, with the need for a deadline at hand, I am telling you all that opening day will be August 11th!  Now that it is official, I think I'll work better.  I always work better with a deadline.

What I've been busy with:
  • Had a marketing meeting with a good friend while up in Omaha who was a marketing major in college.  She gave me awesome ideas and helped me come up with great questions to ask when deciding where to market.
  • Opened accounts with 2 new companies and placed 2 new wholesale orders.
  • Prepared 3 more orders to place this week.
  • Uploaded products to the website (please note that while the category headers are visible on the website, the products are not.  I will activate them on the 11th!  Until then, they are there, but invisible...oooo, sneaky...)
  • Created my business paypal account.  I went back and forth whether or not to use paypal to accept credit cards, or go with a gateway such as Authorize.net, and in the end went with paypal simply for ease at the beginning.  As things get going, I may look further into the gateway option...
  • I am still hemming and hawing with Quickbooks.  Right now, I just have the free version.  I went with that to learn the ropes, but am thinking I may need some of the options in the pro version.  Does anyone have any advice with bookkeeping?  Is Quickbooks better than Quicken?  Is there something else you'd recommend?
  • I have been working on the FAQs section of the website.  Still more to come, but a good start....
Whew, that's a lot.  I found I work best at night.  Which is good and bad--bad because I should be sleeping, good because the house is quiet and the baby is (usually) sleeping.  Tonight is probably a sleeping night.  The baby had a rough night last night adjusting to being home after traveling, so in turn, Lucas and I had a rough night as well.  Here's to a good night sleep for everyone tonight!

Order Up!

Whew!  Ordering the inventory to stock baby, naturally is much tougher than I thought!  So many considerations...colors, numbers, sizes.  My brain hurts!  I have made some great wholesale relationships that I am really excited about, though, so I know it is hard to make a bad decision here...but seriously, how to pick??

Did anyone come up with any thoughts about the search engine optimization?  I clicked through today (using the terms "baby naturally") and found the store on page 29 of google.  Searching the terms "baby naturally blog" on the other hand brings up this blog on the first page.  Hmmm.  Thoughts?

I am trying to come up with a fantastic opening special for the store.  Something fun, unique, exciting.  Again, I am open to thoughts on this as well!  What would entice you to visit the grand opening of a webstore?

I'm now off to try and make a button for the store.  We'll see how that goes : )

Results

Thank you to everyone who voted in my poll!  I wanted to share the results:

Top votes went to:   Fresh Linen
Second:  Lavender Vanilla
Third:  Butt Naked
Fourth:  Natural

I am going to put in my wholesale order for those 4 scents to start!  Thank you so much for your help!

Tomorrow is a big day--I have prepared my orders with all of my (current) manufacturers and wholesale providers and will be submitting them tomorrow!  Then, let the deliveries begin!  I have already gotten a jump on product entry for some of the diapers I'll be carrying, but have the option set to inactive (which is why you can't see them yet if you check the site...).  I didn't want anyone to try and place an order for an item before everything was ready to go : )

In other news:  I got my business cards!  They are fabulous.  I have already handed out about 10 of them.  Woohoo!

To close for today:  another question.  Does anyone have any tips on how to get the store's website higher up on search engine listings?  When I run a search now, it doesn't even appear on the first 20 pages....

A Poll

I'm not sure how many people are checking in regularly, but I could really use your help if you are indeed reading this!  I am trying to prepare my order with my supplier for natural laundry detergent and could really use some help choosing which scents to carry.

Thanks so much!

Uploading!

Today was super productive!  I learned the workings of the site administration and uploaded all my inventory from my first shipment of FuzziBunz!  If you check out the site, you'll be able to see the category headers and such, but I haven't activated the actual products yet, so those pages will still be blank.  But, they are ready to go on opening day as soon as I activate them!  Woohoo!

My experience so far with Shoppe Pro (my host) has been phenomenal.  Karina (owner) is a WAHM and is super quick to answer any questions, and I have also been able to get great help from the Shoppe Pro forums from other site owners as well.  If you are looking for a great webhost for your online store, I highly recommend Shoppe Pro!

I am currently searching for a credit card processor and supplier for shipping supplies.  Any recommendations out there??

Busy, Busy!

Yikes, it's been a few days since I've managed to post on here.  With a good excuse, of course!  We are currently far, far away from our home in Texas.  We made our way to "The Good Life" (that's Nebraska!) on Wednesday, spending close to 4 hours on the plane with our little guy.  We were SO nervous, but it turned out we didn't need to be!  He did awesome--the only sounds he made were little squeals of happiness while he played peekaboo with the passenger behind him.  We were so proud!

Tonight, my brother is getting married!  So, you can imagine we've been a little busy with plans, rehearsals, last minute errands, etc., so not much "work" has been happening since we arrived.  BUT!  Right before we headed out of town, my first shipment of diapers arrived!  I'll be working this week to get them loaded onto the website (although they won't be visible until opening day...).  Now that the inventory is starting to come, it really feels real.  And, August is getting closer, and closer, and closer...eek!

Lots of updates to come this next week.  After the wedding festivities, it is crunch time till opening day!

Day 2

Today, I spent way too much time working on things that should've taken me 5 minutes. But, the end result was what I was going for so in the end I am happy! No more gridlines around the categories and product pictures--woohoo! Also accomplished: ad banner construction. On the table for the rest of the weekend: work on a few FAQs, put in contacts with 2 more suppliers. I tend to be a little over zealous on thinking what I can get accomplished, so I'm trying to keep my to-do list reasonable, especially during a holiday weekend : )

Thank you all so much for your support and well wishes--made my day! We are looking forward to the 4th tomorrow. Lucas had today off work, so we got an early start. We are grilling out tomorrow and if our little guy is up for it, may head out to find the local fireworks displays. I hope your 4th is wonderful as well!

Welcome!!!

Welcome to the new blog for baby, naturally! I am so excited to finally share the news about my new store with you all. It has been a busy month leading up to the debut of the blog. Let's take a quick look at what we've been working on:

  • Research, research, and more research!
  • Probably could have researched my way into the New Year, but my husband finally convinced me that I could keep researching even after I took the next step.  So, I did:  I obtained my business license in May, 2009 and my idea became baby, naturally LLC!
  • Began contacting companies regarding wholesale accounts.
  • Purchased my domain name and hosting account for the website.
  • Hired the wonderful Ingrid at Cherry Tree Graphics to turn my website ideas into a fully functioning web-store.
  • Opened a business checking account and began to feel like a legitimate business.
  • Began designing the blog.
  • Panicked because I promised to reveal the news about the store to my personal blog readers when I reached 100 posts and when I got there I wasn't quite ready!
  • Stayed up way past my bedtime getting the blog and site in presentable states so I could make the big announcement.
  • Put in my first wholesale orders!
  • Made my big announcement and welcomed you all here!
I want to invite you to follow this blog so you can join me in the final preparations for opening day.  I plan to document the process here and eventually add a twitter account and face book fan page.  There will be opportunities to help me along in the process, so don't be shy in expressing your thoughts!  And as we get closer to opening day, stay tuned for special deals and discounts for you readers!  If you want to take a look at the store, check out the link in the left sidebar.  The links are still a work in progress : )

Again, welcome!  It's going to be fun!

About baby, naturally

baby, naturally is a web store focused on providing earth friendly products for your growing family. You will find items here to help nourish your baby in a gentle, natural way; items that are produced in environmentally responsible manners; and items that will grow with your child, helping to reduce the number of disposable and limited use products you will need.

The idea for this store came about after the birth of my son in December, 2008. I became a stay-at-home-mom and although that is in and of itself a full time job, I finally had the motivation to research and act on my dream of owning my own business. Natural baby products seemed the perfect fit, since I was already spending hours each week hunting down the best earth friendly items to use with my son. With the encouragement of my wonderful (and patient!) husband, I finally took the plunge and filed for my business license in May, 2009.

baby, naturally LLC officially opened for business on August 11, 2009!
